A clogged catalytic converter can not only cause a sluggish acceleration, it can cause the car to run very badly at any speed. If the converter is totally blocked up, the car may not run at all!!

If the catalytic converter has any problem at all it will cause a check engine light. If there is no check engine light with your concern you do not have a catalyst problem. The catalyst is the most scrutinized part in the emissions system, it is the last line of defense between your engine and the environment, therefore it is watched very closely by the engine management system. If you have sluggish takeoff, with no check engine lamp, I would check fuel delivery or ignition. If no light, you do not have a catalyst problem.

Update: I cannot respond to your email because you have not verified your email address with Yahoo Answers.

Your 2002 Mustang has oxygen sensors in front of and behind the converters. Yes, it will make the check engine lamp come on. You say that the lamp is blinking, this indicates an engine misfire. You have a cylinder in the engine that is not operating. This could be caused by bad plugs or wires, a vacuum leak, low fuel pressure, etc. Many things. A misfire would explain the sluggish acceleration, you should also notice a different sound to it, and it will run rough or shake. You do not want to keep driving the vehicle with a misfire, this will damage the converters by passing raw fuel into the exhaust, which will overheat the converters and cause them to come apart internally. You used a code reader, the actual code you received would be the most helpful piece of information you could provide, this code would help to diagnose the problem.

Yes I'd have someone put their hand by the exhaust pipe to see if any exhaust is coming out? If not, I'd try rapping on the converter a few times to possibly break any clog loose Your next stop would be the shop....good luck

Don't listen to any of the people who said it won't effect it and that the chech engine light would come on. On most vehicles the sensors are in front of the cat. so they can't detect if there's a problem with it. I would replace it as soon as possible because a clogged cat can cause your cylinder heads to burn out sonner and that can cost alot to fix. among many other problems that can occur from it.

Tune up. Change the wires, cap and plugs. Get higher performance plugs, fuel injector cleaner(2 bottles) and a K&N Air filter. Sluggish gone.

yes. i suggest you cut it off and put a straight pipe on it. it is illegal in most states because of emissions, but most states dont check for it. youd have to find a friend mechanic to do it b/c a lot of mechanics wont do it. if you do decide to do it you will find a noticeable amount in power boost. not much, but noticeable. it worked for my 85 firebird
