Good question.
There is no such thing called permanent job.
While every one retires ( some at 60 or 58 or 55), the emplyment depends on certain rules. The caompany can give you a 'permament' job , but still can give you a pink slip depending on many reasons
1. Disciplinary conditions
2. Branch/company not doing well
3.Your unwillingness to move to a new branch etc.
Hence as long as you are emplyed, stick to rules and perform at your full efficiency.
Have willingness to learn and be ready to get employed in alternate jobs. If the department where you work is getting closed, you may get employed in another department, if the company realises your value.

In THIS day and age, NOBODYS job is "permanent". So if you have one, enjoy it FAST- because tomorrow you could be looking for a position at Jack-In-The-Box...
