that are incompatible with a literal reading of the bible. In other words, what are these people really unable to believe? So far I've come up with evolution (obviously), plate tectonics, the fossil record, radio-carbon dating, and a few others. Let's make a list.

To answer a couple of people, doesn't a literal reading mean the Earth is about 4000 years old? That would rule out carbon dating, plate tectonics and fossils.

What's the point in setting up a strawman?
A literal reading of the Bible would place the age of the earth at about 6000 years. This is not a scientific finding, but one based on geneologies. This is the work of James Ussher in the early 1600s.
Ronin, please explain how "medicine" is incompatible with a literal reading of the Bible? Please read carefully. Young Earth Creationists have answers for all those (and yes they are Literalists).
1. Evolution is not incompatable. Almost all Anglicans and European Christians are Evolutionists. Many Americans are too.
2. Plate tectonics is not incompatable. The Bible speaks of the waters of the deep and waters above. Literalists show plate tectonics as being the result of a world wide flood that breaks the earth's crust and shifts it (Pangea). Non literalists read it just as you do.
3. The fossil record is concomitant with Evolution. See 1.
4. Radio carbon dating? Where are you getting these ideas.
5. Heliocentrism? Cite the verse.
5. Medicine: Louis Pasteur was a Christian

All science is discovery. nothing exists that wasn't already there. If you read the first two sentences in the Bible you have to draw a line and absorb this as one thought. The word "was "translated into Hebrew means" became","form"is To-hoo to lie waste, and "void"s is bo"-hoo,empty or indistinguishable rain.
Your problem is that you are not reading with edusated insight. I would be willing to open a dialog to assist you with the litteral text.
Uneducated people don't realize that God never says the foundation was layed down on day one.
God is a better scientist than any man. The fact that he has revealed to mysteries to mankind is a gift. The Earth that man was given was "Good" It's mans misuse of his Dominion over the earth that is the problem.

Yeah, but science is finding more and more truth in the Bible. How are you gonna get around that one? If science agrees with the Bible, what are atheists gonna do?
