I have always been the kind of person that viewed other people's religions with respect. I was watching Real Time the other day and Bill Maher said that a religion reaches an all time low when it literally promises virgin pus*y in the afterlife. You know that is pretty pathetic. The Koran says if a person is a good Muslim, when they die they get 72 virgins. (Do the women get 72 male virgins? LOL) Question: How far would you go to prove that you are open-minded, evolved and accepting of other people’s religions? What if part of their worship was drinking urine? Would that be enough for you to say "OK these are a bunch of damned fools!” What if it promised that members would grow wings and fly even as a human beings? What if it said that after you died you would get a sex with 72 people..oops that one's not hypothetical LOL. So what would you need to observe a religion and say/think, "These people are idiots" Or would you never say/think that about anyone's religion no matter what?

Hezuo, actually I do not believe in any organized religions. I've done some study of many of them. IMHO they are all inconsistant, fairy tale-like, and even down right funny. All religions are a load of hooey!

Good question Roxanne.
I guess most people who really respect other religions probably follow one simple rule - Don't insult other people's beliefs in any way, shape or form.
Now, if someone shovels are remark like "Muslim terrorist" or "Your Prophet's a pervert" and similar stuff like that, then you can't blame the offended side from lashing out with equally insulting (if not factual) remarks about the Christian side.
Bottomline:
Don't say something about another people's beliefs unless you can back it up with facts and make sure that you don't have any skeletons hiding in your closet which the offended side can use against your belief.
Peace.

You're saying that the idea of a man being greeted by 72 virgins is far-fetched but you can believe that a human man defied physics and parted the red sea? How about the one where god tortures a man to win a bet with the devil? These stories are parables, which are meant to be didactic and not be take literally.

you gotta be very careful when analizing religions. But, the first thing you have to keep in mind is that there is no reason why religious beliefs have to be reasonable. Maybe you think that your religion makes sense, but, in fact, it sounds fine because you believe it. Maybe some people may think that the idea of a virgin mother is stupid, but that's what we christians believe, don't we?

As long as a person is kind and peacable i will respect them as a person until they gave me reason not to. However having respect for their religion is another matter all together.
As a Christian I stand by what the word teaches us... it tells us :
2John 1:10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into [your] house, neither bid him God speed:
2John 1:11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.
No where in the scriptures does it teach me to be tolerant of false teaching. I know many are going to say what gives you the right to say what is false teaching.... the Bible does... as that is what I accept as truth and we are after all answering the question according to "our" beliefs.
This may seem close minded to many... but I would rather be considered close minded and obey the word of God than to be what the rest of the world accepts as open minded and as you put it evolved.... and be disobedient to the word.
God bless you :)

I would say that when they say that all who do not believe will either have to convert or be killed. And that the world will be only of one religion and ruled by that religions Holy men. That would also be the same group Bill Maher mentioned as well.

I'm very open-minded about religion, but I have to definitely draw the line when religion is brought into politics/government/moral and ehtcal concerns. I don't mind if that is what an individual believes but to me, everyone has his/her own principles. By using religion in an argument about, let's say, abortion (very controversial), it doesn't make any sense to me because it doesn't apply to everyone. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Not everyone shares your morals; we're all raised differently. Religion is about your own faith. Never impose it on someone else.

Personally I draw the line if they don't proclaim that Jesus was the Son of God who came down to earth and lived a sin free life and died a substitutionary atoning death for my sins and rose again on the third day. I don't call people fools whose religion doesn't teach that, I just don't have any respect for their beliefs although I respect them as people who have been created by God in his image.

I think it's foremost important to respect the person. Religion shouldn't be made as a barrier between people. We all have our beliefs... the ones that matter will stand true throughout all time.

Well let me answer this two ways.
First :
Personally so long as the religion does no harm to me personally then I have no problem with it. That said, if people want to drink urine, then so be it. However if they want to force me to do it, then they've crossed the line. Simply put, I wouldn't want someone hindering my religious practice if it isn't harming or interfering with them so why would I want to hinder someone else's religious practice?
Second:
My religion (Hinduism) says that all religions are ultimately paths to God. Or to state it a bit better: all religions contain the ability for a person to learn the tools necessary to get back to the Divine. In otherwords, to say it as a Hindu teacher once said "All religions contain the universal truths of the innate nature of the inner Self, you just have to look deeply into them." This same teacher then went on to say "all have the ability to discover the universal truths of the innate nature of the inner Self with or without religion." And later made the point "Even a mother who is devoted to her child, who sees her child the same way a devotee sees God, and focuses her life on her child, then she too will get to God because the divine spark of God is in the child as it is in all things in the universe which is the manifests out of God."
So, to recap:
As far as I'm concerned so long as their practices don't infringe on my rights to practice my religion, do no harm to me, then as far as I'm concerned they can believe and worship however they want (because we are all worshipping the same God anyways).
--------------------------------
"The sun shines down, and its image is reflected in a thousand different pots filled with water. The reflections are many, but they are each reflecting the same sun. Similarly, when we come to know who we truly are, we will see ourselves in all people." Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi
Peace be with you.
