I don't know what kind of half a**ed dealer you went to, but all fuel injected engines have a mass air flow meter of some sort, I don't care what brand they are. Take it somewhere else, if this is what they told you, they are idiots. If it is lean, it may have a vacuum leak somewhere in the engine vacuum system. PCV valve tubing or elsewhere. Or it could be low fuel pressure causing a lean concern or an intake manifold leak. Judging by what you just said, I would not take it back to that dealer, they do not have a clue about how an internal combustion engine operates and should be be working on electric golf carts instead! It needs to be diagnosed by professional, and not the horses rear who told you that bull!

It means your oxygen sensor is reading your engine is running lean. It can be caused by a clogged fuel filter, bad mass air flow or manifold absolute pressure sensor, a hole in the exhaust, too large of exhaust tubing, bad seal between the intake manifold and the engine block and more often then not, a vacuum leak. This can be caused by a cracked or broken vacuum hose, probably the line leading to the MAP sensor. It could even be a faulty oxygen sensor.
I don't have any books at home, or I would look up the code for you. I would start by looking for vacuum leaks and replacing the fuel filter. Also make sure the air filter has been changed recently. A dirty air filter can constrict the air flow to the engine, and, if it is clogged badly enough, trip a code.

A 1997 Toyota Camry does not have a MAF (mass air flow meter). Instead it uses a MAP (Manifold absolute pressure sensor)
