There have been many notable grey thoroughbreds. I had to dredge my memory banks to come up with The Tetrarch a famous grey horse born in 1911, his sire was Roi Herode whose sire was Le Samaritain whose sire was Le Sancy, whose dam was Gem of Gems, whose sire was Strathconan, whose dam was Souvenir, whose sire was Chanticleer, whose dam was Whim, whose sire was Drone, whose sire was Master Robert, whose dam was Spinster, whose dam was Sir Peter mare, whose dam was Bab, whose dam was Speranza, whose dam was Virago, whose dam was Regulus Mare, whose dam was Crab Mare, whose sire was Crab, whose sire was Alcocks Arabian who was born in 1700. All these horses were grey. Regulus was a bay son of the Godolphin Arabian who was also a bay; his dam was Grey Robinson who had grey from both her paternal and maternal sides.

I thought it was interesting to be able to trace the tenuous connection back over 200+ years. I'm pretty sure The Tetrarch passed on his greyness, but he was the first horse I could remember to illustrate any point I may be making.

They are all listed as grey not roan.

I'm not sure where you are watching your horse races but there are tons of greys. http://www.finalturngallery.com/albums.php is a horse racing photo gallery - browse through it and check out all the grey horses. True white thoroughbreds are rare but there are several farms that are breeding based on color, which has increased the number of white thoroughbreds for scenes like this http://www.barbaralivingston.com/gallery/album140

Not sure where you are watching racing but we have lots of grey thoroughbreds.
They are sort of spotted grey and many have dark mane and tails and some start out almost black and fade out to grey as they age.
There are very few white thoroughbreds but there are lots of grey ones.

They do exist, and I have even seen one win, but they are rare. Most thoroughbreds are sorrel and bay.....just genetics i guess.
