Focussing will never help u relax,or put u to sleep.it will be really the opposite.
the answer is meditation, and i can suggest some simple technique which works.
Close yr eyes.Watch yr breath as it goes in and out.As u breathe in make the sound (mentally not aloud) soooooooooo and when exhaling the sound HUmmmmmmmmmm.Just repeat for 7minutes.
the whole thing is called so hum meditation.
The process shud be done in a relaxed way and not bothering and stressing yrself on the procedure.
In afew minutes u will slip into slumber. When that happpens dont resist or worry if 7 minutes are over
just sleep tight

You do not need to focus on sleep. Let it come to you!. By focussing on something it keeps your brain busy. I'll tell you what I do. I never get to bed before I am sleepy. First I watch the late show with Jay Leno, and the late late show with Craig Fergusson which are humorous and makes me laugh and relax, then I take some deep breaths inhale by the nose slowly... hold it for a little while then let go slowly of all the air in my lungs slowly, visualizing all of my stress going out into the universe... Then when I feel sleepy, I go to bed and I do not think of anything I did or have to do in the morning... Most of the time I fall asleep in my chair and wake up when there is a commercial because it is louder... That's what commercials on tv do to me... ( smile ).
Try it, perhaps it will work for you too.
Good luck and God night. ( not a spelling error.)

Meditation is a good method. It calms and relaxes your body as well as you mind. Drugs can put any body to sleep, but what if for some reason you do not have them, it would be nice to still be able to sleep right. Meditation can be that self induced drug, by this I mean you don't take a pill but yet you can still relax your body and you mind, which seems to be the problem, to the point at which you can sleep. I have the same problem sleeping as my mind goes on and on, it was not until I starting meditating that I could control it. Or you could always count sheep which does not work for me.

When I start to try regular meditation it makes me need more sleep; but just doing it occasionally doesnt. So maybe meditation done regularly would help you have regular sleep. Warm milk w/sweetener helps to make you sleepy, and I agree with the counting or counting backwards idea; also some difficult mental task that will make your mind tired might work. Tv or radio on low volume helps me sleep when I feel lonely.

Imagine each of your body parts falling asleep:
Say to yourself... "My toes are asleep. I can no longer feel my toes because they are sleeping. The sleep is traveling up my foot. Now my feet are sleeping. They won't move because they are asleep."
Continue all the way up. It takes me about 15 minutes. By the time I get to the top of my head, I am focused on sleep and nothing else. :)

I have the same problem sometimes. I have found the best thing so far is Pamperin. Now if you are a guy it might not work for you. I also drink sleepy tea. And this might sound silly, but I color. Its very calming for me. Good luck..
