for certain Direct Comissioning Programs( Professional degrees, with experience, like Doctor, lawyer etc) I believe you have until 39...basically, you need to be able to do 20 years before you reach age 60. regular commissioning programs have different age limits for different communities.. SWO is 28, for instance, But IWO/IP and INTEL have until 35.

define scientist. are you talking Nuke? Engineering? What?

These communities are highly comptetitive. you need not only that Bachelors, but ideally a Masters and a few years of experience as well.

Mrs Bubbs has not a clue about Military Pay.
One branch of Military does not get paid better than another branch of the Military.
an E-4 in the Navy (Petty Officer 3rd Class) gets paid the same as an E-4 in the Army (Corporal)

the whole E-1 thru E-9
and O-1 thru O-10
is called a Pay Grade you get paid by what your Paygrade is and if you have any incentive pay like Hazardous Duty, Flight Pay, Submarine, Combat, etc...

At the time when I was in the service the Cutoff Age for joining was 34 for the Navy. That was for Enlisted and I dont know if it is different for Officers or if it has even changed.

You have to be very fit. Moreso for Officers in general. Navy and Airforce Fitness tests are a little less strenuous than say the Marines but you still have to be fit. Talk to a recruiter for details.
