this is the turning point for a story i'm writing. if you need background, the scheme is that the main character goes on a business trip to dubai (in the u.a.e. or, the united arab emirates), negligent of her passport's expiration date. upon departure, the customs officials deny her and she is ultimately stuck there.
-how long would you be detained?
-would the american embassy intervene?
-would there be a way to return to america via an alternate & urgent route back home?
basically, what happens next??

Until Jan 1, 2007, you would be able to use your birth certificate and a license in its place. If you don't have your birth certificate, then you would probably be stuck there for a few days, until they could verify you are a U.S. citizen. You would have to enlist the help of the American Embassy to get this done. I'm sure exceptions could be made if you had high up political connections and a private jet. But for regular old civilians it would be an inconvenience. (I don't think you would be detained though).

Usually the company that flies you in to UAE would have checked for this before allowing the passenger to fly as passport control at UAE should not allow the person into the country on a short trip therfore international law says the company that flew the passenger is pays for thier return.

However it is a regular occurance for foreigners passports to expire whilst studying / working abroad, at which point you contact the embassy in that country for a replacement in the same way you would contact the passprt agency in your own country.

Passports certainly do expire.

The previous responder is correct in saying that the person would never have been allowed to travel into the country in the first place if they did not have the required passport validity for the type of visa they were on in the first place. Most countries require a minimum 6 months validity.
