My daughter (will be 3 next month) urinates in the potty on her own, but has never gone poop in the toilet. I try to encourage, but so far - nothing. She used to have erratic bowel movements, but now she regularly has them at nap time, or over night - these are the only times she's in pull-ups. I think she'd now holding them in because she doesn't want to go in her panties, but doesn't want to go in the potty either. How can I help her see it will be okay, if she won't try?

I'm going through the exact same problem. While bribing your children works I honestly don't think it's a good idea. But two things that I've tried that seem to work. Is a little stool that is big enough for her to put her feet on (if she potty's on the toilet rather then a potty chair) children sometimes need to bear down when they poop and that makes it easier. Also try reading a story while she's on the toilet. It can distract her from any fears she may have and she'll go without realizing it.

My son, as well for a long time only went pee in the potty. His favorite thing to do is play monster. SO, I told him that monsters use the potty. Told him that good monsters push. To go #2! Plus I let him watch the part of the shrek movie where he went to the potty. Amazingly it worked! He'll sit there and tell me that he is a good monster and then pushes. I think if you find something like a animal or something that he/she likes, advise them that the animal (or what ever) does it too. Just a thought!

i had this problem for the last 5 or 6 months :( ugh, it got to the point where she was constipating herself b/c she didnt want to go in the toilet OR the undies.. after trying everything i just decided to let it go pretty much completely. i just didnt say a word to her about it really. occasionally reminded her that she should try and poop in the potty but i just took all pressure off. I'm not sure if it was that or her just deciding when she felt like she wanted to do it but she is now FINALLY pooping in the potty.. sometimes i think thats all it is, they will do it, whenever they are ready kwim?

She's not ready to poop on the toilet, she should not be in pull ups because they are NOTHING like either diapers or regular undewear, the feel nothing like regular underwear and when she gets into underwear the sensation of pee will be different and she may not realize that she is wetting her underpants. She should have been kept in diapers until she was fully potty trained...and not to have been potty trained until she was totally ready...obviously she wasn't/isn't.

Buy her something that she really wants (for my son, it was a semi truck that held a bunch of cars - price around $10)...

Put it on display somewhere she will see it often but can't get to... (for us it was the bathroom counter)

Tell her she will get it if she goes poopy in the potty 3 times (for us it was once, but that was all it took - may take your daughter a few more times)...

Our son sat on the potty every day chanting "I want the poopy prize" until he finally pooped!

Hi i have 3 boys and they are just starting to become toilet trained. I had the same problem so i just left them alone and they eventually did it. You cant force them so i suggest to just be patient and go with the flow.

alot of children have the fear of loss when they they have bowel movements. try giving her a stimulant for the bowel and be very aware of her and do your best to get her on the potty. your dr. can advise you on the best type of stimulant to use . good luck

I definitely pro bribe.

Or, since she is old enough, you could just not let her wear the pull ups anymore. You could buy a cloth training pant as a transition.
