Am not going to lie to you. It is quite uncomfortable. I have had to have two due to having my first two kids by c-section. THe discomfort only lasts a few seconds and women live through it every day. I was quite nervous going back the second time, but all is well and I even went on to have a third child naturally without the need for an epidural. Try to put it out of your head as it is just one small thing before you get to hold your baby. ANd trust me once they are here you will end up with a lot more grey hair from worrying about them than worrying about an epidural.

I've had four children. I had epidurals with the first three.
The needle in the back didn't hurt me. However, the needle site hurt like hell for about a year after each time. It felt like a migraine in my back. Also, my epidurals were all what are called "spotty" epidurals. Meaning, the pain seemed to be centered in certain spots. It felt like every pain was multiplied by a hundred.
With my youngest, I had no epidural. I will be forever grateful that I didn't have it. My pain reached it's highest level before we even got to the hospital and stayed at that level! I was able to feel everything and participate in the birth like, I feel, I couldn't quite do when I had the epidurals. The best thing was, my recovery seemed to go faster than when I had the epi!
I understand that the pain gets to be too much for some. I know that with my older kids, about 17 years ago now, the pain was too much for me!
Good luck with your baby!

My epidural really hurt, the only reason was because I was already dilated 6 cm and all of my labor pain was in my back right under where the needle went in. My dad had to hold me to keep me from moving. After the needle was in me it really didn't hurt. I thought that it might hurt coming out but it just slid right out.
Worry about it all you want, it is a really scary thing, just make sure you get it early, the earlier the better.
Good Luck

They numb you up with a smaller needle first that feels like a bee sting and burns a little, but it's nothing you can't handle....especially when you're already having contractions! You won't feel the epidural needle, maybe some pressure when they're inserting it, but it won't hurt. It's soo worth it to not feel the pain of child birth. I'm always a little worried when i get mine because I have such a crooked spine and it usually takes the Dr a while to find the right spot to put it in, but it's still so worth it.

My first epidural needle I hardly felt a thing. My second one was more painful than the labor, then it didn't work! I had to deliver a 10lb6oz baby drug free, and I have decided I will never do the epidural again! Just ask for some iv drug, that will do it, since I labor quickly, if you don't or just don't know this may not be the right choice for you. Trust me, the fear is worse than the real thing!

Everyone is different but I had an epidural and I didint think it hurt at all but then again I was to focused on the pain of my contractions. An epidural is so worth it. I was in so much pain and it helped me out alot. Once the needle is in, you will forget all about the pain.

You are in so much pain at the time that I dont think I even noticed it. But I did suffer the after effects of back pain from it for at least a few months. But as horrible as child birth was I think for the maybe ten minutes of rest I got from the epidural it was a fair trade, lol.

It can hurt a little or a lot depending on many factors. The good news is that you can do several things that help. One of the biggest factors is making a good path for the needle by arching your back well. It sounds strange, but if you relax, there will be less trauma and therefore less pain.

Yes, I thought it hurt, but it is nothing compared to the pain of labor! The pain you have with an epidural is short. I think the anticipation is actually worse. I thought getting the IV in was worse.

Not really. It hurts a lot less than contractions. They rub numbing stuff on your back then give you a shot that's a local anesthetic before giving you the epidural. None of mine hurt at all.
