People said swimming would make you buff. Is that true? I have been swimming four times a week, and I feel extremely tired afterward each time - neck, back, arm, chest, hip, thigh, calf and even my foot. How long do I need to swim to have significant result?

Swimming will broaden your shoulders, tighten your longer muscles, build your back and torso muscles. If you combine this with a bit of weights you will (depending on genetics) have a more tighter muscle look than the bulky.. only do weights look.
Compared to other cardio sports, I believe swimming will help build you the most... nevertheless, it also depends on the stroke you do....
If you balance between Breast and Freestyle... you will be well defined.. throw in Butterfly... and you will build a really strong back/wings....
The great thing about swimming is it is east on the bones.... so over long periods of time (years) you will be alot less likely to cause damage to your bones or tendons(unlike running). You might get a few cramps here and there.. but the damage caused by a bad cramp goes away in a day or so....
As for the amount of time.. depends on you body.. and how much/hard you swim... a few months to a year...

Truthfully...swimming will not make you buff

I played water polo and swam for 7 years, and while it is awesome cardio and helps build endurance, it will not greatly increase your muscle mass.

Swimmers actually develop a very thin layer of fat, to help better with buoyancy. That's why all the professional swimmers you see will not be chisled. They will be in excellent shape though, don't get me wrong.

I suggest doing weight-lifting as well as swimming, and then you will have great endurance and become very powerful

Hope this helps =)

(and don't worry, once you get more used to swimming, the soreness will fade, and you will feel great [and a little tired] after the workout)

swimming does wonders for the long muscles, it wont make you all lumpy but it will make you strong and agile and it will help your shoulders too, if you swim laps for an hour a day or something. lift weights to get the muscle difinition if thats what you want, and do lots of crunches to get that middle tight. swimming is great and biking a lot is great for the legs, so keep up the long muscle exercise but lift if you want to get more bulk, and eat good proteins

It's an aerobic exercise. It will tone muscles, not really build them up. Define "buff," please. If you're looking for muscles, sounds like you could drink a couple of shakes a day and hit the weights.
