I live is Southern California and the major grocery chains offer to shop and deliver you groceries to your home for a fee of course. I love the service and I use it often. Should I tip the driver? The driver is usually someone different each time. Please Advise.

I would tip because this is how that person is making a living. In fact, it may be one of a few jobs they have, so they need the money. I bet they make minimum wage.

Absolutely. Generally, delivery people are almost as poorly paid as waiters and waitresses - and are expected to make up the difference in tips. They generally are using their own vehicles and buying the gas for it too. When you figure in the cost of gas plus the time away from the store where they could be carrying bags out to cars at 10 per hour, they are really depending on the "delivery clients" to be kind.

That particular service is not available everywhere. Don't let it disappear into oblivion. Tip the delivery person. The reason stores don't all have that service is because they can't get anyone to deliver the groceries for free.

I would check with the chain you are getting the groceries from. I live in Northern California and I use the Safeway home delivery sometimes. I was curious when i first began using their service if I should tip, and it expressly says on their website that their drivers can not take tips. just like some grocery stores do not allow their cart boys to take tips. i would check with the chain.

I would think a tip is in order and in this case not 10 or 15 percent, but by how many bags they carry in. I'd go with seventy five cents to a dollar per bag.

Ask the chain what is expected. I am assuming yes, they are doing you a service and it is typical to tip in any service.

I've never heard of this service, but I would think that you should tip that person, seeming as you would tip for pizza delivery.

Yes you tip per bag but I'm not sure how much per bag it is. You will see that they will be more helpful to you if you start tipping them. Word gets around who tips and who doesn't. Ask your friends how much they going rate is for your area.

Dear S. CAL, Yes, that person works very hard for his or her money. Also, you better believe the store doesn't pay much and that person probably depends on those tips.

If your rich enough to have your groceries delivered you should be able to afford a tip.

I also use the grocery delivery service and I don't tip them because they usually charge between 7.95 and 9.95 for delivery, depending on which store you order from.
