If a religion or culture is right, it would be timeless. Tribal roots are being depicted in the negative sense, in that it does not apply to today. I feel that this is correct thinking of those negative tribal roots because they are man-made or "of man" and not true spirit. True enlightenment is timeless and applies to life at any time and all points in history. Therefore positive tribal roots from different religions and cultures are not looked at as the generic negative tribal roots and not seen or shown in the "tribal roots" as used in your question. Weed the greed (of man) and you are left with the good in religions and cultures.

Well in Islam, for example, you could talk to members within the religion, (perhaps those that may be opressed), and find out how and where there might be corruption within the religion/society. If you approach with the intent to help make things better, rather than approach someone like you want to change them to your own catering, then you are making a step towards progress. Progress is good.

if all cultures shed their tribal roots to become "modern" which actually means westernized, then all cultures would seize to exist.

What good can you find in any religion? I see nothing but strife and conflict everywhere it spreads. You need look no further than today's headlines to see that all organized religion is a plague.
