Get mad if you want but smoking can be even worse than drinking. And I've never seen more smoking than at AA meetings! It amuses me that they a all hype about not drinking but say nothing about smoking. Funny thing my uncle had a heart attack they told him quit drinking not smoking so go figure!

i agree that smoking is probably worse than drinking, but you don't have to smoke 40 cigarettes a day after quiting alcohol. my friend quit drinking and smoking after 20 years (cold turkey) when he found out he was going to be a daddy. That was 7 years ago, and he hasn't gone back since.

I actually quit smoking after I became involved in AA. Most of the people I got sober with quite also.
To address if 'AA is crap' - AA has become ineffective as treatment for a most problem drinkers. This is largely due to treatment centers and counselors adopting a pseudo-12step approach to their treatment and implying a connection to AA. Courts have contributed greatly to this problem by "ordering" people to AA and therefor implying a association with AA.
AA should be a "last ditch effort" after all other psychological and medical treatments have been tried.
I would encourage our 'enthusiastic' AA-bashers to petition treatment centers to switch to a non-12step approach to alcoholism and drug addiction. That would be a much more effective approach.
Cheers!

In many parts of the country, you can't smoke in meetings anymore, but AA is still crap.
People trying to quit drinking through AA are four times as likely to end up binge drinking as those who attempt quitting on their own, four times as likely to end up DEAD (George Valliant studies) and both have a 5% success rate:

I don't need to make things up about AA, the most damning statistics come from their own Triennial Survey and studies conducted by George Vaillant, member of AA Board of Trustees and Harvard researcher.

I don't know if it's crap, but my accountant got arrested for beating the life out of his AA sponsor in a drunken rage.
So in the totality of things, I would question its effectiveness.

There is nothing wrong with people going to aa, if they follow the steps, are ready to be totally honest with themselves and keep going to meetings then it will work for them.
