I always wondered how many people are not on the planet- well on it's surface at least.

I know that it was noted on 9/11 when they had to land all the planes that were in the air, there were literally thousands of planes with over 1 million people.....and that is just in this country or people flying to it.......................

Hi, a goodly question.
One that I have pondered on, having spent much time aloft.
I suppose that an aviaton statistician would give some definitive answer, but I was told that at any one time, both Americans & Europeans are in the air to the tune of "around 5%" of us.
Alarming yet possibly about right.

I look forwards to checking out the findings.

Must go micro-gliding this afternoon for an hour or two.
Does that count ?

All the best,
Bob

Those on the Space Station + those on any spacecraft that is flying + every single person and crewmember on a military or commercial plane that happens to be flying at the same time.

Which is a huge number that I am not going to even try to calculate since I don't know what time of day, which day you mean or the schedules of every single airline company and all military flights. If I ran NORAD I might be able to give you a concrete answer, but no one else can.

Now if you consider people in the atmosphere to be on earth then you can narrow it down to the 3-person crew on the International Space Station and the crew on any spacecraft currently flying. Which at this point in time is the crew on the Space Shuttle. When the Space Shuttle lands then it will only be 6 people. Since the Russian Soyuz was launched Saturday.

In short the number of people that are flying at any one point is a huge number that can only be known to someone who has access to an international network of satellites like the United States, they have to know the size of the crew on every military plane flying at the time in question, and they have to have access to the passenger manifests and crew lists of every single airline and when it flies on the day, at the time, in question.

It is impossible for me to know this answer since I am not cleared for that intelligence, and neither are you. However, when you become commander of NORAD or commander of the Air Force then maybe you can tell me.

I was told that in any one hour there is 64,000 people flying above the US but what the total for the world is and at any one moment would be a guess 100,000-200,000 would mine
Does bungee jumping count?

at any given time there are in excess of 12,000 aircraft in flight with an average occupancy of 200+ therefore a very rough mathematical guesstimate would say around 2.5 million people at any one time are airborne in aircraft around the world !!!!

Sorry... I don't have that many fingers, much less toes. It numbers in the 10's of millions.

That would be a large number---like, I'd guess 37. Am I right? Do I win?
