It's not a mystery....

For dogs, looking someone in the eye is a challenge of dominance. So when you look your dog in the eyes and he looks away, it's because he doesn't want to challenge you. That's good!

Inferior dogs cant because they feel people are the dominant one. Some aggressive dogs will stare at you dead in the eyes though. There was this one dog and were staring at each other for like 5 minutes and he was not gonna looking away either!

In the dog world staring into the eyes is a challenge. When you stare at the dog he thinks you are challenging him for dominance. When the dog looks away that means he's submitted to you. If you do this to a dog that is overly aggressive or dominant you could get bitten.

In the dog world, both domestic and wild (wolves etc.) when a canine looks another in the eye, it is seen as a challenge. If you find a dog that refuses to look you in the eye, it usually means he his submitting to you and doesn't want confrontation If a dog does look you in the eye, he's usually challenging you.

My dog looks into my eyes all the time, just like a human would.

It's a sign of submission. Some dogs will look for a little bit, but eventually look away first for the same reason.

When dogs look at each other in the eyes, it is a threat, or a challange to fight, so unless you want them attacking you, don't look them in the eyes too much... especially when you are grinning, they think you are bearing your teeth, and can get agressive.

Does the type of dog matter or the size of dog? Come to think of it, I have 4 dogs, Pit Bull, Rat Terrier, the Chaweenie (Chihuahua/weenie dog mix) and a miniature Australian weenie(Australian Sheppard/mini weenie dog mix) dog. And they will all look into your eyes. Always have. Not sure if it how we raised them????

My dog does she comes up and looks straight at me.

(probably because she can, when I'm sitting her head is at my head height. she's a Wolfhound Mastiff cross) she has beautiful serene eyes. Almost human like.

She isn't aggressive she's very sweet and well behaved

Because when you look a dog (or any animal) in the eye they think that you are challenging them. they will probably bite you, or attempt to.
