I'm replacing the drywall in my bath with hardibacker then going to tile. I have a piece that is about 2 1/2 feet where there will only be a stud on one side. I'm putting up 13x13 tile. Should I recut the other piece and get more to make sure it is nailed into a stud on both ends or can I tape or morter it to the next piece? Thank you!

it need to be supported substantially, you make it sound as if your own answer can be done, that would be the simplest way. You could cut a stud to fit in where the splice is and use deck screws to fasten it at the top and bottom to the plate. You can also place a one by six flat against the existing piece of drywall overlapping the splice area and use 1" coated screws through the drywall on both sides of the splice.
