If the skin is just flaky, and the dog's not overly irritated with scratching/itching, you may want to get the doggie on a dermal support cap that your vet can give you. My doggie's on 3HV Caps, but I think there's another called DermaSupport. They're fish-oil based supplements to make the dog's coat more shiny and less irritated. You can also pick up some Cod Liver Oil for about $2 at any store that carries vitamins; doesn't have all the nutrients, but works well if you're on a budget.

If doggie's skin is still flaky, time to see a vet. You're probably dealing with allergies.

Change her food. Skin allergies are most commonly caused by corn and wheat products. Read "Foods Pets Die For" by Ann N. Martin for all the gruesome details. You will be shocked and amazed.
Look into Artemis, Wellness, Canidae, Innova, and California Natural. Innova EVO is the best for allergic dogs. You will be pleased with the results, even though it costs a little more, it will save you vet bills in the future.
Good Luck

What shampoo are you using? Most human shampoo's will dry animals skin to much. Water dogs, like the lab have oils on their skin to help protect them. You might dry specialized shampoo's from the pet store but if it persists you should consult you vet, your dog could have a skin disease and need a medicated shampoo. Good luck.

Take him to the vet to find out what is causing the problem. It could be something as simple as general dry skin (solution: add a raw egg to his food every day) or he may have an allergy to something in the house/neighborhood, even his food.

Not only could it be your dog's shampoo, it could be her food. Try a more expensive dog food for a month and see if the problem improves.

You might want to consider to go get your dog checked out. It might be something more serious. If it isn't then you can just go buy a dog shampoo.
