Yes, DIALING A 1-800 number is free, the phone company will not charge you long distance charges for that call. Nor should any charges be passed on to your phone bill from the other party.

However, what that company does on the other end is up to them. Ideally they have to tell you first before they charge you anything, but if they have your credit card number then they can charge you for the "services" you receive.

So if you say dial a phone sex operation that uses a 1-800 number then you shouldn't be charged for that call by the telephone company, but if you received any of their "services" then you can be charged by that company.

Free to callers from land lines, but cell phone users probably will have to pay for minutes. The owner of the number pays a fee so callers can call free.

but if you use your cell phone, it may cost against your allotted minutes (depends on when you call and your plan)
