Umm... the dead ones are no longer alive.

The live nits are brownish and close to the scalp, dead ones are white and farther from the scalp.

just clean them all out anyway, better safe than sorry. Been through head lice twice with kids, unfortunately I got them the first time too. I was so frustrated during them that I actually held the vacuum cleaner nozzle to my head while vacuuming furniture! We all survived! You will too!
