I have had the disease myself since I was born. I am now in my 40s. Make sure your son drinks plenty of water, and eats water soluable fiber. These two things help to regulate the bowel to avoid the extremes of constipation and diarrhea. Avoid foods that bother him. These foods are different for all people. Also have him get lots of exercise and sessions of relaxing too. Highstrung people have more problems with IBS.

I'd recommend you check in with the IBS support group at WebMD. They're a really great, knowledgeable group of people and a lot of them are moms dealing with their kids' problems as well. You can find a lot of great information just reading old posts, and they're always willing to help you with any questions.
