Today i had a filling in my 47 it think, maybe 46 and when they gave me the needle it hurt like hell! then very quickly my tongue went numb and then my face. After a few minutes the whole side of my head was numb. I felt a bit dizzy as well. The dentist said just to go home and sleep and have lots of water. This usually doesnt happen, why this time?

You had an inferior alveolar nerve block injection. The needle happened to actually enter the body of the nerve itself. When we give injections, a "perfect" injection would be JUST next to the nerve. The target in this case is about 2 cm under the gum, so you can never really tell EXACTLY where the nerve is in relation to the needle. Fortunately, the numbness usually resolves spontaneously. Often it goes away in "normal" time. Sometimes it takes a few days and sometimes it takes up to 3 or 4 weeks. If you are still numb in a day, it is time to notify your dentist, just so he/she can begin to track your progress to see if you are getting better or if you need referral.
