In my college government class they just covered this. The British didnt have harsh taxes or crazy rules or anything. We didnt have misrepresentation. Colonists actually had less taxes than people in Britain. It was all started by a few smugglers who didnt sell there trade to the british but to other places so they didnt have to pay any taxes. The smugglers got into a skermish with some of the king's soldiers and the soldiers were shot and the King was insulted so he sent troops. Our fore fathers actually tried to make peace with the king. But in those days you didnt fire at his army without it leading to war.
