The navy has good schools and did a wonderful job of preparing good meals, when I was on duty in the '50's.

I ate like a champ in every US Army base I was stationed at. Real food, fresh ingredients. The cooks were civilian contractors, the only military personnel were the KPs and a buck sergeant keeping an eye on the KPs.

The food was so good we were never tempted to eat in restaurants except when we wanted a whopper, chinese or tex/mex.

Their best was midnight chow at the permanent party mess hall. Our AIT was so long that they treated us almost as if we were permanent party. Incredible omelette's cooked to order.

That said, the US Navy cooks for the president and they run his retreat at Mount David, and the USAF feeds him aboard Air Force One. Where is the Army culinary representation?

Many are telling you to go Air Force. As someone said earlier, all the meals in Iraq are handled through Kellogg, Brown and Root which is a division of Haliburton. Air Force does not have a specific cook AFSC, we have a services AFSC which is all encompasing. If deployed, one day you may be running the MWR tent, the next day you could be pulling morgue detail, the next managing the gym. My unit is a self supporting unit, or at least we were which meant we could set up anywhere, and have our own site security, our own services (cooks), but now our services section is going away so we don't even have our cooks anymore. Yum, yum, MREs. If you really want to be a cook, go Navy.

I know for a fact I ate the best while in the US Submarine Force. They took the top 10% of the class for subs. I knew two cooks that cooked for the president and vice president. Second best was the Air Force. (I also heard nothing but complaints about the surface Navy's food so be sure to get into Subs!)

The Navy! Not only cuz you get to serve on nice A/C ships (not the field) but they also use some of the finest CIVILIAN culinary schools to provide advanced training for the Sailors... and the Submarine force DOES give the best training. Heck the rating is even named "Culinary Specialist"!

first off u arent a "chef" in the military. you are a mess cook. all your doing is heat and eat. you dont get to flavor or spice it up because everything has to be plain incase anyone has allergies. the "10" cans are the same whether you are on a boat or a plane or a foxhole. now i come from a navy family and married an army man. if you join the army or marines u r most likely going to get shipped over seas and end up on a humvee because they have contractors doing the cooking or ur eating mre's. now in the coast guard if you plan on making a career out of it, its 10 years at sea 10 years in port. the navy does tours of 3 years at sea, approx. every 10. so if you want to actually be a "chef" go to cooking school and get a real job.

The coast guard, they have it really good. A friend of mine is a chef on a coast guard cutter and he gets a lot of experience and its a pretty easy going job. And you still have the same pay and benefits and any other branch. Just a suggestion.

My son is a cook for the national guard. When he was deployed to Iraq he discoverd that the war was catered by haliburton. So he was reassigned to a combat unit and wound up running a machine gun in a pick up truck because they ran out of up armor hummers. So I'd go airforce or navy if you really want to cook. shoot for a submarine. Those guys eat alright.

I was in food service in the USAF. They had great training, and unlike others who have answered this question and had no idea what they were talking about, the food is seasoned and tastes very good. My squadron won several awards for our meals, based on taste and presentation. God bless and good luck.
