You can wear a pantiliners for swimming, however you won't really be able to use commercial pantiliners or organic pantiliners because they are made from paper which will go mushy in the water and the glues used to stick them in place will come loose.
If you wanted to use pads or pantiliners you'd really have to use cloth or homemade pads or pantiliners, or padded panties, I'd also say that if you swim while on your period you might want to wear shorts to hide the wings of your pads, that is assuming you mind, if you don't mind people seeing the wings then it's fine just to wear your bathing suit. Pads, pantiliners and padded panties like those you can get at Lunapads - http://www.lunapads.com - there are a lot of cloth pad companies as well as patterns for homemade pads.
You can also use menstrual cups or softcups for swimming, they go into your vagina and there is nothing showing on the outside of your body, they are a lot safer than tampons, easier to use and can be left in for a lot longer without leaking, they also won't absorb the pool water as tampons do. There are bell-shaped menstrual cups like Divacup - http://www.divacup.com - or softcups like Insteads - http://www.softcup.com
You do not need to wear tampons for swimming.
Nor 'should' you if you don't want to.
You can also always sit out when on your period.
Your period doesn't stop with the pressure of water, it does seem to some that their periods stop in the water but this is only because the water dilutes the blood and menstrual material coming from their vagina, also because in the water you tend to be horizontal so gravity is not acting as much on the blood to bring it down out of your vagina.
There is no reason at all not to swim, menstruation is not dirty at all, nor is it something people have to be 'subjected' to, and certainly the pool does not need to be drained or disinfected if a women or girl swims while on her period. Just think about how many bodily fluids are within the pool from people swimming, there are actual unhygienic bodily fluids that get into the pool; this is why they have chlorine in pools and why they are cleaned regularly. Not to mention that tampons also allow for some blood to get into the pool, tampons themselves are also unhygienic themselves.
It's very shocking that someone who claims to be a nurse and a mother has such a horrifically negative, outdated and offensive view of menstruation, not to mention so oblivious!

You either must wear a tampon or not swim for hygeine reasons. If there is blood in the pool, the pool must be drained and disenfected. Panty liners will not catch any blood, because it will absorb the pool water and not your blood. The water will not stop the blood from coming out, it just washes it away. When you get out of the pool, it will run down your leg.
I have had 2 girls on swim teams, it is not unusual for girls to sit out swim mets, they just sit with the other girls on the swim deck(in their street clothes) and offer support by cheering on their team mates.

You can't wear a pantyliner. It would bloat up like a diaper. Wear tampons. Usually you can't even feel them. If you can you should consider getting junior sized ones just for when you're in the pool.

Hun, either wear a tampon, or don't swim for that time. It's not fair to subject other poeple to your blood in the water...think about it...

I think you have a lot to talk about with your
team coach. You must be very young , I mean
you never had swimming lessons, you mom
never talked to you and in gym at school no one ever
said a word about "it"?
I do not want to embarrass you here - but talk to the coach.
If it is a "He" , don't worry - you are not the first girl who ask
questions like that. He will most likely talk about that anyway
with you girls (the whole team).
