A Van.
Honda Odyssey
Nissan Quest
Toyota Sienna
With most full sized SUV's you'll be spending too much on gas.
All three imports are powerfull, roomy, and full of features.
I would stay away from the Ford and Mercury Montery.
The Chrysler is a proven platform, but its still a Chrysler.
I drive an 05 Quest about 400 miles a week for work, and even the base model is nice. The Maximas 245 hp V6 under the hood makes it worth while, and if you get a nicer model with navigation, DVD, and the skylight option, you'd have a nice ride. 5 star safety, to boot.

It depends. Do you need an extra seat for your partner? If so you will probably need a people carrier as I don't know of any cars that have 6 seats. A Ford Ka is no good, it only has 4 seats! A fiesta would be good if you do only need 5 seats but you need to have room for all the booster custions which are law now. My dad used to have a skoda fabia i think it was and that was quite roomy and it was cheap!

Honda and Toyota- extremely reliable
Anything French or Italian will break down, German is good but expensive and English.. well i don't think we make anything anymore lol
Don't buy American, terrible engineering, they will quite happily put a five litre engine in a car that drinks fuel so quickly it may as well have a hole in the bottom. Even by pouring litre after litre into this V8 monster they will still only get 120 horse power out of it and a top speed of 90 mph.

Look at GMC if you're looking American, it is Chevy, but much cheaper in price and with all the extras very dependable and cheaper to fix in the long run, for Japanese import I think the Toyota Highlander is also very nice and has lots of goodies, and if you want something a little bigger (maybe you live way out in the country) the Nissan X-Terra- lots of goodies, very comfortable, roomy, and it can take inclement weather well . The totyota and Nissan will be a little more expensive in the long run because of repair costs, but if you keep maintenance up it shouldn't be a big deal. happy car hunting. P.S. My husband was a mechanic and we talk about the new models of cars coming out all the time. :)

Fiat Multipla. Looks like it was designed by a group of people who never met, and personally I wouldn't drive one. But its got 6 seats, is no bigger than say a Ford Focus Hatchback, has a decent boot and is fairly cheap. It's a masterpiece of logical thinking, just a pity about the looks.

All new Volvo S40 if you can afford it. with no kids easily seats 5 adults... and an excellent safety rating. Death by airbag..... (joke)
got one meself, comes in from 17,000, and you can easily get three car seats in (two rear and one front,) given the new laws in the UK this week, and the 10 year old would sit in the middle rear with or without a booster seat.
Excellent car

Skoda Octavia could be suitable. Quite roomy inside and with very good quality/value ratio. It is always at the top of consumer satisfaction surveys and its dealers have very good reputation. I have been using one for last for five years (had spent 4 months before reading through specialist magazines, test driving Renaults, Mondeos, Focuses, Volvos, VWs, Vauxhalls, Peugeots and Japanese cars)

I like my Honda CRV, even the older ones have a lot of great fixtures, is ideal for carrying around a few people and not having them feel squashed plus still have room for stroller [pram] and your shopping.
I find it VERY easy to drive / park etc etc and great for mileage as well.
