We recently came across a stray beagle. Upon bringing her to the vets last week we have determined that she is about 4 or 5 yrs old.
She is such a sweet dog and we love her soo much! The only problem is that she has been peeing in the house! Unfortunatley we don't usually catch her "in the act". But it is obvious it is her, and not our other dog. (Our other dog is a great dane and she leaves lakes, not puddles!)
How do we correct this?? I clean and spray the soiled carpet spots with natures miracle and all, but the carpet is the least of my worries. She dosen't "ask" to go out like our dane, how do we train her to do this?? Our dane literally yells and jumps when it is time to go out. I let the beagle out as much as possible, usually once every hour and a half. The vet didn't seem to think there were any problems with how much she goes pee.
So, we would appreciate any tips people can give us on how to train an old dog new tricks! Thanks!

Wow...this sounds like my house...I found a shih-tzu 2 years ago. He immediately became one of the family after nobody claimed him. Such a sweetheart, around 9 or 10 yrs. old. He had pee'd in the house for the most of the 2 yrs. we've had him...and we could never catch him doing it.(our other 2 dogs are girls and like your Great Dane, they also leave lakes!) I used Natures Miracle to clean the spot...and it worked great on the spot, but not the smell. I spoke with the vet and he suggested I use a product called THE EQUALIZER. It's a carpet stain and odor eliminator. (It's a spray). My dog would always use one side of a certain room to do "his thing" and since I started using this spray, that area has been clean (no pee) for the last 2-3 months. I've searched all over the house for his "accidents" but I really don't think he's going in the house anymore. Call it coincidence... or magic! ... but you might want to give it a try. Like I said I got it from my vet, but maybe you can find it on the internet if your vet doesn't have it. Good luck! (aren't dogs just the greatest!!!)

One of the best things you can do is get a crate. Confine her to it when your not home or to extremely busy to keep a careful eye on her. When you are home keep her in the same room you are in. It's entirely possible she just may not be used to her new surroundings and doesn't know what is expected of her. When she does make it outside, give her a treat when she comes in and make a big deal out of what a good girl she was. When you let her out make sure you ask her if she needs to go out. That way she will start to figure out she needs to tell you. I used to think the crate was mean but now I realize dogs like it {after they get used to it}. It's like having their own little room to go to and not be bothered. Give her a special blanket and toy if she likes them. My dog actually sleeps in there at night and I don't even close the door anymore.

well maybe when you do take her out and you see her going to the bathroom outside give her treats and praise her. You might want to put paper down for her to go on. Or if you can take her to obedience school.

Good luck.
