I got a puppy about a month ago and I already had a year old cat. When we first brought the puppy home she and the cat got along really well and the cat loved on the puppy and even cleaned her face on occasion. Now, a month later, the puppy keeps pouncing the cat and tugging on her ears and biting her face, chewing her tail, and chasing her around. Is this just the puppy's way of playing and that cat's is tamer or is the puppy really trying to hurt the cat? If so, what can I do to help them get along better?

Your puppy is horsing around real rough by the sounds of it. Best to have a nice high area for the cat to escape to and relax. You can by these sorts of things at any pet stores.

I suggest you tell the puppy "no" when it gets too rough. Otherwise, it's play if the cat doesn't complain. The puppy is still in the playful mode and the cat is young enough too where it could enjoy it if it isn't hurtful. Does the puppy have toys to chew on? Do you play with him too? He may be using the cat to get attention.

Why not put up a baby gate to a room that the cat can escape to if the puppy gets too rough. The cat will be able to jump it but the puppy won't. Sounds like he is playing...but too roughly. How does the cat feel about it?

Your puppy is just trying to play with your cat. Is the cat hissing and swatting? If not, I'm surprised. If she is, let her....puppy needs to be put in his place. I know it sounds mean, but it's a given...the puppy needs to learn his limits. My parents bring their corgi puppy over from time to time, and if he goes at the cats, he gets a hiss and a swat....it's teaching him to respect the cats' space.

If your cat is tolerating it, that's ok too. Just make sure your puppy doesn't get TOO rough....eventually, he'll grow out of it.

cute I just lost a cat of 18 years named neve neve was 13 years old when I got max my toy poodle . neve gave him one good swat and they were friend ever since. the cat will let the dog know when it is enough as long as there is no blood let them work it out on there own you will see. It could also be that the puppy is trying to show dominance .take lots of pictures and enjoy two completely different creatures and the way they carry on.

this is just the puppy's way of playing. If the cat really felt threatened she would teach the pup herself where the line is. I'd say just watch them and see what happens so that no accidental harm comes to either one.

my 3 lb kitten and my roommate's 75lb lab are best friends, but they play really rough too- their favorite game is to chase each other around the house. if the puppy backs off when the cat meows or cries, they're fine. if the puppy is really trying to hurt the cat, try to keep them apart when you can't be around to intervene.

i think the puppy is just trying to play, but will probably get rougher as he gets older. so you are going to have to let him know that this is not OK,scold him when he gets rough.if he really hurts the cat it will defend itself, its just instinct. they will learn to get along or the cat will get away from.

dogs need to teeth and get more exercise in their early stages of life. i suggest u provide chew toys, bones, and ropes, or it will use the cat as a chew toy.

This is probably the dog's way of playing. Try to give the dog something to do, like some toys or something. Best of luck to you and your dog. . .!
