Hi I am really intrested in adopting a puppy, I really don't want to buy one because there are so many out there that need homes. The problem is that at this time I can't seem to find not one single animal shelter in Providence Rhode Island that have puppies. I have went to Petfinder but they really don't have a shelter were you just walk in adopt and take the puppy home , so anyone mdoes know please help me out. I know the problem is that it is kitten season but the pounds had said that fall began puppy season and here we are in the fall season thank you very much for your time

There are plenty of puppies in need of homes- however rescuing one of those dogs doesn’t mean they will just give it away free. Many shelters have an application process to adopt, but the fee they charge often includes many things that would cost you much more if you were to do it through your own vet. I just adopted a puppy from a very poor rural shelter for $75 dollars (spay and first shots included), but we have probably spent an additional $500 in vet bills in the two months since we got her on finishing her puppy shots and medication for some health issues she has. Just something to think about if you are only looking for “free”.

I know sometimes you see free puppy ads in the paper or online and in all honesty I would generally avoid these. Unless the person is a good Samaritan who is helping place a stray litter, it gives people who recklessly let their animals breed an easy out and does nothing to deter them from letting them continue to add to the overpopulation problem.

You mentioned petfinder. On their site they have a classified section where they list dogs/cats, etc looking for a new home. Most are from families. Check on there. Also look into www.freecycle.org They have groups listed by states and cities. You can sometimes get free pets on there. Also craigslist.com
