On one hand, yes, because I think we should all be free to believe what we want with fear of persectution. But...scientology is a cult, and harmful. I think it is especially terrible that people can raise their children under that kind of influence. I guess mostly I just wish there were some way to make them see how awful it is so they would get rid of it on their own. Then again, I guess the same could be said of just about every religion. Don't mind me I'm just blathering....

Are you asking if there should be tolerance of people participating in Scientology? Or are you asking if people should have the right? If you live in the USA, newsflash bucko, they do have the right. Tolerance of course is not something that can be forced upon people.

Scientology is a symptom of a larger issue in society. The attraction is that L.Ron Hubbard gave answers to people about spiritual questions for meaning. Unfortunately, that's the best they could find because society in general doesn't LIKE people who actually question either the paradigms of religion or the paradigms of science. The real problem is the lack of intelligence in our general society, and a lack of motivation to find any wisdom. Most people have been sold on the idea that whatever makes them happy is 'okay'. Our society needs to grow up, and it needs to grow up fast.

They have the right to harm themself in whatever way they want to so of course we should attempt to still love the person... it's just I doubt very much they understand the harmful situation in all it's harmful glory. Basically they don't know what they're getting themselves into and they deserve to.
Scientology is undeniably a cult.
Every cult can be defined as a group having all of the following five characteristics:
1. It uses psychological coercion to recruit, indoctrinate and retain its members
2. It forms an elitist totalitarian society.
3. Its founder leader is self-appointed, dogmatic, messianic, not accountable and has charisma.
4. It believes 'the end justifies the means' in order to solicit funds & recruit people.
5. Its wealth does not benefit its members or society.
Are Cults Harmful?
To remain within the strict mental and social confines of a cult for even a short time can have the following disastrous effects:
Loss of choice and free will. Diminished intellectual ability, vocabulary and sense of humor. Reduced use of irony, abstractions and metaphors. Reduced capacity to form flexible and intimate relationships. Poor judgment. Physical deterioration. Malnutrition. Hallucinations, panic, dissociation, guilt, identity diffusion and paranoia. Neurotic, psychotic or suicidal tendencies.
Those detrimental effects shouldn't befall anyone not fully informed of possible consequences ahead of time.

Sure - just like all the other cults like Catholicism. Oh, sorry, I forgot, Catholicism is too old to be called a cult.
Tolerance doesn't mean excusing illegal behavior by cult leaders or members however.

All religions are cults, if you don't believe in them. Many have been around a long time, but all are cults if you think they are.
That being said, all religions should be judged by the same criteria - Do they help their adherents lead better lives?
Do their adherents help society or do they harm society?
You can't apply rational judgements to any religion's belief system. By definition all religions are beyond rational judgements.

The USA Constitution guarantees citizens the right to worship without government interference. As far as anyone can tell, they haven't done anything illegal. We should tolerate them the same way we do people of other religious beliefs. Just because we don't believe the way they do doesn't mean we shouldn't tolerate them. We should live by the golden rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

I believe on the basis of Scripture that the only way to heaven if by faith in Jesus Christ and His finished work of redemption on the cross. Having said that, I believe in the right of people to practice what ever religion they want, so long as it doesn't use religion as excuse to harm and/or kill others. In short, I believe people have the right to be wrong.

What'cha goin to do about it? What kind on intolerance would you portray? If you cannot tolerate others doing as they please, then you are not fit to be living in a free society. If you cannot tolerate people pursueing their own happiness, are your really an American? You must be one of those Christian cultists with an extreme agenda. Tolerate that, punk.
