The first thing I would do before moving to California is save up about $10,000 to cover your expenses for moving, 1st/last on rent, car registration, insurance, phone, cable, etc. This way you are set to go once you have the other things lined up.
The second thing I would do before moving to California is search the internet for jobs and housing, then come for an extended visit. On your visit look for a job and a place to live. So much of where you end up living depends on where you are working or going to school. Talk to people in your potential living area and see if it seems like your kind of neighborhood.
Once you have a job and a place to live lined up, pack your car, hug your momma and move here.
Good luck!

Well, there are cars, trains, planes and buses. Then there are bicycles and motorcycles. You didn't say where you live now, but if you are in the continental U.S. boats probably won't work.

Most people rent U-Hual or other moving vans. Will depend on how much you are moving, and your budget.

Get in your car and drive, or get on a plane, on a bus, or a train, or just walk.
