I live in South Carolina.I have to go to a wedding that is a 2 hour drive away. I will be coming back that evening. Problem is I don't know what to pay the babysitter. I should be gone about 7 hours at the most. My kids are 7 and 2 and very well behaved. She has babysat for me before but only for like 2 hours at a time an I usually just give her like $20. But since I'm going to be gone so long I just wanted give her an hourly wage. She has no opinion on what I give her. She left that up to me. I will leave her with plenty of food and snacks for her and the kids to eat. So....what is the going rate for a babysitter today.

I was talking to some other people and minimum wage for a job here is $5.15 an hour so I was thinking of 5 or 6 an hour. Seems fair because she will be fed and have a computer and cable T.V. Like I said my kids are well behaved. The 2 year old is pretty independent and plays well alone when I'm doing housework and whatnot.

She is my neighbors daughter and her mom will be home the entire time if anything happens. She is 15. I will be gone from 3 until 10.

I also do alot of things for her. I give her rides to her friends house. I take her shopping to spend the money she earns. I'm always taking to eat when I go and I pay.

My close friend/neighbor also has a 15-year-old daughter that babysat for me this summer for my 3 girls. I worked from 8-12:00, sometimes an extra 30 minutes. My girls are 16 months, 3, and 7. I made sure they had breakfast before I left and gave them lunch when I got home, so all she had to do was play with them and give them a snack. She also babysits for me for a couple hours on other occassions, not always for all 3 kids. We agreed on a rate of $5.00/ hour for 1 child and an extra $1.00 and hour for each additional child. It worked out well for both of us. Her mother told me she has been very happy with the arrangements.

You'll be gone for most of the day and not in easy range to step in if something comes up. A two year old still requires a fair amount of direct care, especially since most of that time will be during the day, when the child is up and at "em. I would say she should at least get $60- $80 for the day. It is a lot of responsibility, for a longer amount of time than you have had her before and , I'm assuming, on a weekend when her services would be most in demand. If you trust her enough to care for your kids for a whole day, then she deserves to be well compensated.

PS...I tend to pay $5 per hour, per child to my sitters. Generally, whatever hourly you pay, the rate should increase by at $2 an hour after midnight or when they have worked more than 8 hours.

That sounds fair. I have heard 5-6 an hour. What stinks for her is that she will only get $10 more for 5 more hours work. Maybe just give her $40-$50. If you can afford it.

How old is your babysitter? That actually does make a difference. What times will you be gone? Will she need to transport your children anywhere? WIll she need to put them to bed?

If she is a teenager and will be staying at home the entire time, I would giver her between $35-$40 for the entire evening. That is incredibly fair.

When I was a teenager, I charged $2/hour! Isn't that wild?
