Last last good product with the Norton name on it was the Norton Utilities for Windows 3.1 about 12 years ago. Since then, they've become bloatware that does more to slow your computer down than it does to speed it up and/or protect it.
Symantec (the company that owns the norton line) keeps buying other companies and turning their products into cr@p. PowerQuest Drive Image (now sloppily merged with Ghost) is a prime example.
Another good example is Roxio's GoBack product - it used to work quite well on the systems I saw it installed on... but since they took it over, it causes more people to post questions like "I can't access my drive and now I might lose my data!" than any single product I've seen.
As far as the antivirus product goes, from what I've seen and experienced, they take WAY too long to get virus definitions out. A client of mine using Symantec's corporate version was infected with a nasty worm a couple of weeks back... other antivirus (Dr. Web, Sophos) caught the bug, Symantec didn't catch it for 3+ days and $1600 in my consulting fees. 3 days later, it protected them... after all their systems were infected.
Summary? Symantec (and in turn, Norton) is nothing but a marketing company - that's the only thing they know how to do well - sell you cr@p that doesn't work well!

Norton is a good anti virus but it uses a lot of your computers resources and slows your computer down. I used it for years and didn't have any virus problems, but I discovered a better anti virus that doesn't slow your computer down and eat up resources like Norton does. If you want to buy an anti virus, I highly recommend NOD32. You can read about it and purchase it from the link below. NOD32 isn't free, it costs $39.00 a year, but is well worth it and it's cheaper than Norton.

Don't get it!!!!
Everyone here makes good points. You're paying WAY too much for a mediocre program. Norton only alerts you about viruses AFTER they've infected your computer. It also hogs a lot of your CPU capacity while it's scanning. Every menu has an "ad" for upgrading or installing extra features, instead of offering helpful tips. I just don't think you get your money's worth.

Everyone is saying not to get it because it only works against the threats that Norton produces, and releases onto the world wide web(to create necessity for the product). It will NOT work against the REAL threats on the Internet, yet it costs a bundle of cash. At http://www.grisoft.com you can download AVG anti virus software absolutely free. It has worked on every threat that I have come across, and I go where it is dangerous.

1. It's not perfect. Of course, no AV program is, but for THE brand name AV software, one would expect much more.
2. It hogs your system resources - and I mean really hogs. It's just not realistic or fun to run it while you are gaming or running any other serious applications.
3. Something like http://free.grisoft.com or http://www.pandasoftware.com/ works just as good without hogging all your system power.
