I have owned OES, golden retriever and currently have a boxer and mixed (basset/lab from the pound) I was wondering about the PBGV breed. I have never met one, just seen them on tv.

They are NOT a basset hound. They are in no way related to basset hounds, they are only called "basset" because that is the french term for a short-legged dog.

They are smaller and lighter, and more terrier-like than basset hounds. They are active and friendly, but some can be scrappy with other dogs.

Here is the FAQ page for the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen Club of America:

I have never owned one but have seen them at dog shows. That would probably be your best bet. Go to www.akc.org and go to events. Then go to Event and Award Search. Click on conformation shows and your state. You will get a listing of shows. Go to one. They are usually free to get in but may cost a few dollars for parking (I am going to one this weekend and will pay $5 for parking). When you get there, get a catalog and find where and when the judging will be for pbgv. Go to ring side. Do not ask questions during the judging, everyone is focused on the ring. Watch. Then when it is over, approach a few of the people. The will be happy to talk to you about their dogs. You will be able to pet the dogs and see them for yourself. Not to mention, being able to find a puppy or older puppy/young adult (that was being grown out for the ring but did not turn out) that might be available. This is how to find your good breeders and breeder reps (also known as handlers).
Good luck
(I plan on checking out the Scottish Deerhounds this weekend - thinking a "big" brother or sister is what my shelties need!!)

They are Hounds, so you want to do your homework on them. Make sure you are ready to commit to training a more "stubborn" breed of dog. Though you do have experience with different breeds of dogs, so it might be a good dog for you.

I have included a good FAQ website on that breed.

They are a Basset Hound, so i wouldn't expect them to be highly trainable or very active.

I like them, cute and scruffy looking.
