Uh, are you saying that your brother set Windows to 8 bit colour mode?
Fixing that is easy. Right click on an empty part of the desktop and select Properties.
Then click the Settings tab and you can change back to 32 bit colour there.

funnily enough i have just corrected this problem on my laptop. If you right click on the desktop(windows xp) then go to properties. On the settings tab click the advanced button. Then select the adapter tab. Click the list all modes button to see a list of all the available modes and bit sizes for your pc. if only 8 bit is there then you will need to update or install graphics card drivers (even if you have intergrated graphics) if 32 bit mode is there you can select this and press aplly to change size.

Also to check that monitor and video cards have the correct drivers and to see if you have a problem with a device try this:
Go start then Run. type dxdiag and select the morehelp tab. Click on the MSInfo button. When the information is displayed increase the components catagory and click on problem devices sub catagory. This will give you a list of any problem devices or ones without drivers, in the right hand box. This is a good way to check that you have all that is required.
On my laptop when i checked here i found that the video card had missing drivers and so i knew that i had to get them off the internet. I went to dell website and got the vidoe/graphics card drivers from the support pages. I hope i have helped you in some way
Regards

He probably deleted the driver for his video card. Go to the manufacturer's web site and download the drivers for his model.

you might try going to video cards manufacturors website and see if you can download the drivers and associated files. If I remember correctly-- the resolution is set by the video processor (video card).
