exterior paint is a bad idea. it is very durable for outside, but stays much softer than interior paint, so that it will give/flex with the expansion/contraction of your exterior siding. also, it will smell much worse when applied. the epoxy idea that someone suggested is really stupid. you cant put epoxy over regular paint, it will lift/melt the latex paint that is on the walls. bad bad bad idea!!!
my solution:
first: quality if key to a good paint job
use benjamin moore paint, it is very good. i would suggest either an eggshell finish, which is more durable than a flat. as an alternative, the best, most durable, washable paint you can buy is a product called Regal Matte finish. it is a scrubbable flat finish that will be more durable than any other paint on teh market. it is expensive, but VERY good. you can get the regal matte finish at your local benjamin moore retailer. find one at http://www.benjaminmoore.com

Can exterior paint be used to paint an interior room?
I was wondering if I could use exterior paint to paint my son's bedroom? I want something that will be very durable. If I can't use exterior paint to paint his room then I would like to know why I can't and a suggestion for something else that can hold up to being in a child's...

There are two types of house paint. Water based and oil based, The difference between indoor and outdoor is the outdoor has some UV protection that will keep it from fading. This will not make you sick. The oil based paint might make you sick but once that it dries you will be fine. The reason that you got sick is because you were nervous about using exterior paint indoors or you were not used to doing anything physical. Everything will be fine.

Exterior paint is fine to use inside. We ended up painting most of out house with exterior paint and it has been fine for the past 3 years. However the secret to paint durability is the glossiness the glossier the paint regardless of color or int vs ext the more durable it is. Also, since it is a kids room then he will probably appreciate a glossier finish. Plus, it is much harder for him to write on or scrtach a glossier paint.

i am a painting contractor of luxury homes and here are my thoughts...you can use ext paint inside but i would not reccomend it as the exterior paint has a different chemical base to it and will not have the longevity if used inside , they also have higher v.o.c. and you dont want to use a high v.o.c.(volitle organic compound) paint inside....just get a good latex with an egshell or semi gloss sheen and you will have all the durability and washability youneed

Stay away from the exterior paints - they may contain volatile components that will make it unpleasant to be in the room.
There are now KITCHEN PAINTS. Behr for example sells them. They come in flat, satin, and glossy but every one of them is intended for daily scrubbing without fading. We used then for kitchen cabinet interiors and they look great.

Use an EPOXY paint. it will be very gossy and HARD. it is what we use in public restrooms so tey can be cleaned. It still looks good though.
Go to a real paint store and ask them for epoxy paint and tell them why you want it. they will point out the right one.
And by the way- all domestic house paint sold in the US has been lead free for years......
Good luck.

At Walmart they have a childrens paint that holds up to KIDS! It comes in lots of colors but is a little high. You could use it or an enamel paint where the wear will be the worst and it will wash well also.Use a reg. indoor flat in the same color or different color on the other places to keep the cost down.Have fun!Make your son wash it every time he does anything to the walls and he will stop!
