I am going to New York City for the first time, and I want to make sure I don't miss anything.
So I am looking for some ideas and what I shouldn't miss excluding the obvious (Ground Zero, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty)
I want to know about good places to eat & I want to dry a hot dog with sauerkraut and I want to know the best place to go to get it!

Here are some good places to visit on the Upper West Side:
The 91st Street Garden in Riverside Park.
Barney Greengrass (541 Amsterdam). It's a small delicatessen that doubles as a breakfast and lunch restaurant. They don't take credit cards, so it's cash only.
H&H Bagels and Zabar's at 80th and Broadway.
The 79th St. Boat Basin (79th St. and the Hudson River)
Verdi Square at 72nd St.
Gray's Papaya (72nd and Broadway). Their hot dogs are simple, but they make the best papaya drink I've ever tasted.
Café Lalo (between Broadway and Amsterdam, on 83rd St.)
Starbucks at 80th and Broadway.
Ocean Grill (384 Columbus).
There are a couple of store facades you can also visit: the old Barney's store at 7th and 17th and Maya Schaper Cheese and Antiques at 106 West 69th.
When you're done, rent the movie You've Got Mail and then marvel as you see in the movie many of the places you've been to!

Well clearly the best place to get a hot dog is at the original Nathans out at Cony Island, but it's sort of far. If it is nice weather, then take the F train out to Cony Island and eat at the original Nathans and walk on the beach and maybe ride some rides or play carnival games if you like. There's also a museum and a freak show out there, and maybe Burlesque as well (depends on the day).
Otherwise, you can get the best hot dog in Manhattan at Gray's Papaya on either 72nd and Broadway (which you can do before or after seeing the Museum of Natural History or the Planetarium on 81st... or you can eat at Gray's Papaya on 38th and 8th Avenue (crappy neighborhood though... but if you are seeing the Empire State Building and then shopping along 34th street, it might be a worthwhile stop), or you can find one on 8th street and 6th Avenue in the village where there is also good shopping and fun things to do. Those are the real NY experiences for hot dogs I would say.
DO NOT MISS the Museum of Natural History or the Metropolitan Museum of Art... depends on your particular interests. I'd definitely see Central Park if the weather is nice... it is essential.

For hotdogs, you've got to go to Gray's Papaya.
And give the papaya juice a try.

"42nd Street Deli" - i have no idea what this person is talking about.
"Tavern on the Green" - Not noted for their food.....
I concur on the Papaya dog comments...you can also get great deli (and hot dogs) at Ben's, Sarge's, or Katz's
There are literaly more restaurants here than you could possibly eat at in a lifetime, considering that new ones open and old ones close every day.

Peach I LOVE hot dogs!
Ya GOTTA try the dogs at "Papaya King" They're world famous.
They're at the corner of 7th Avenue and 14th Street in Manhattan
Nathan's are good too. These are the guys that sponsor the Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island (Brooklyn) every summer.
The Nathans in Manhattan is located at : 875 3rd Avenue.

Well a good place to go eat in general is Tavern on the Green! It has really great food, and a lot of tourists make that stop!! I would reccomend going during Thanksgiving, because then you can see the Macy's Parade!! I went two years ago, and it was amazing!!!!

My cousin Vinnie says try "Nathan's" first (for the hot dog). Second one to try is "42nd Street Deli" (all their sandwiches are good). You may have to have a reservation for the Deli place, though.
