I don't know about special diseases in cocker spaniels, but an old dog getting vertigo and being off balance for a day or 2 is quite common and is probably related to the middle ear.

The only thing I can think of is that they are prone to ear infections because of the long, heavy furred ears. This keeps moisture in and make it a breeding ground for bacteria. THis sounds sick, but stick your nose In your dogs ear, and if it stinks, it is an ear infection. Take it to the vet immediately.

It could be an ear infection or also a neurological problem. Cockers are known to have problems with both.

Ear mites can do this but so can cancer. Before my husky died she did the same. It was cancer and she had to be put to sleep.
I hope it is ear mites.
