Usually they send it directly to your school for tuition. There are exceptions depending on the types of scholarship.

They send it directly to your school. After they schools takes out the cost for tuition, different fees, and room & board if you decide to live on campus, some schools will give you the rest back in a refund check, and some will send the unused portion back.

It goes directly to your school.

Reasons:
1) It verifies that you're in school.
2) It makes sure that you use the money FOR school.
3) They just don't trust the average student (sorry)

My music scholarship went to pay tuition in- and out-of state, private lessons, and when we went on the road, room and board.
