Look in autotrader, because craiglist doesn't have many listing and choices.
It is going to be difficult to buy one of that year in good shape. WV are expensive to keep and repair, why don't you try to get an Escort or Cavalier in good shape?

2000 Volkswagen Jetta
Description — $2,000, 2000 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA #135974, Must Sell This Week, Good Condition, Smog & Safety, Starting Bid $2000,

I found this on cars.com

I think the only way you could get one that cheap would be getting very lucky at an auction or buying one with a major mechanical problem.

Maybe on eBay.com, but you are more likely to find one in that has been damaged for that price. I hope that you find what you are looking for! Finding any car that does not have damage for that year is a hard find! I got lucky with mine! Bought it in a small town with 128,000 miles on it with every thing in mint condition and not a thing wrong with it; every thing recently SErviced before purchase. (1999 contour se sport V6 DOHC)

Come on. Does no one use Craig's List? Almost every city has a craigslist. It's a great place to find cars, rentals (houses/apartments), and just about anything else you could possibly imagine wanting.

Jettas keep their resale value so finding a car in that price range may be difficult or even impossible.

Maybe you'll have more luck with a 98 or 99.
