It could be a trapped nerve becoming enlarged known as Morton's Neuroma.
Here is a website reference:
http://www.podiatrychannel.com/mortonneuroma/
This can be due to wearing high heels or tight shoes in the past or partly hereditary due to the foot shape.
I used to have a pain like twisting between the third and fourth toes when I was wearing very high heels with narrow toes. Now I still wear high heels but a broader toe box and I don't get the pain anymore.
It could be any number of things but have a look at my website which gives some ideas to find out if this is the cause.

I have the same problem.. Sometimes I can't fall asleep because I get these twisting and stabbing sharp pains in my toe.. I kick my foot around alot and finally have no choice but to get up and take 600mg of advil..... I think it could be from wearing inappropriate shoes. when I change my shoes to something more comfortable and good for my feet then it stops

She needs to see her Dr. It sounds like Gout. The Dr. will run a test on her Uric Acid levels to see if it is. If it is that she will be fine, but her toe will hurt really bad. Keep it leaved. Try Aleve for the swelling and fever in it. Good luck and God bless you both.

It could be any number of things. Nerve damage, bad shoes, arthritis. With out seeing her it would be difficult to say. Start with asking her to buy some comfortable hard sole shoes. If that doesn't cure the problem have her see a podiatrist.

A lack of calcium in the diet can cause cramps like that. If your mom increases her intake of calcium then she MUST increase & balance her intake of magnesium with the calcium. This is to prevent an imbalance of the two she won't get kidney stones.
Dehydration can also cause cramps.

Try going to webmd.com and looking this up. Sometimes, problems with your feel can reflect problems within the body. She should get checked out ASAP.

Sounds like dehydration... or it could be the Sumo wrestler standing on her foot. Ask her to drink a liter of water and/or get a new dance partner!
