Funny this but the Tipperary mentioned in the song is actually referring to a place in London Called Tipperary Square (I think) which was where all the prostitutes hung out around the time of WW1. So 'the sweetest girl I know' is actually a hooker.
I reckon it's about 200 miles as the crow flies from the fields of Flanders to London-maybe a bit more
