A large purple onion is just an onion.
A "Shallot" is a special member of the onion family - but is really its own species. I have not seen any purple ones, only yellowish brown.
A Shallot is milder than an onion, with hints of garlic in them, and are usually longer and larger than baby onions, or "Pearl" onions. Shallots cook up to a nice creamy texture, too.
Although they look like shallots, "Pearl" onions come in purple and yellowish brwon. They do not taste like shallots, though.
Just make sure they are really shallots, and not pearl onions - ask your grocer before you buy them.
Good Luck!

Neither!!!
Shallots
Shallots are often thought to be another variety of onion, but they are actually a species of their own. They grow in clusters, where separate bulbs are attached at the base and by loose skins. The shallot has a tapered shape and a fine-textured, coppery skin, which differentiates it from onions. Shallots were first introduced to Europeans during the 12th Century. Crusaders brought them home as “valuable treasure” from the ancient Palestinian city of Ascalon.
ShallotsShallots have a mild taste that combines the flavor of a sweet onion with a touch of garlic.

the big purple onoin is just a big purple onion for salads and cooking, shallots are those small ones like green onions with a mild garlicky scent. Shallot bulbs usually have "corners"because the tend to grow in clusters kind of like garlics but only a few bulbs and looser.

I believe the little ones are shallots and the big purple ones are still considered onions. The purple onions still have the texture of regular sized onions, just their color varies.

The big purple onions are called red onions. They have a much stronger flavor than Vidalia, yellow, white or sweet onions.
Shallots are a cross between red onions and garlic. They look like retarded garlic.
If I don't have any shallots to use, I dice a red onion and add garlic to the recipe.
