It could be several things. It could indeed be low self-esteem related to past abandonment issues. It could also be that this person has had negative relationships that created a sense of loss that they are not able to fully understand. Lastly it could also be that they are so taken with you that they are experiencing fear of loosing you and/or that they feel they don't deserve you.
Lastly, it could be that your behavior toward others is so flirtatious that it makes them doubt your commitment. All of these contribute to that feeling. It is, however, just a feeling. Communication is the key to getting past this.

A little bit of jealousy shows we care for someone or something very much and don't want to lose it. When jealousy goes beyond that, then we have major trust issues & low self-esteem. We have grown up not trusting people, so this baggage is carried on. When we have low self-esteem, we tend to believe everyone is a threat and better. You have to figure out why that self-esteem problem is there & do what it takes to personally feel better. If a person has both problems, then it is really going to take some work. There are those who use that jealousy to control and like keeping someone jealous....it makes them feel secure and better. I probably said more than I needed, but have been there and I hardly feel the crazy green-eyed monster anymore. Just a twinge now and then that shows I do care.

To be jealous doesn't mean you have low self esteem, it could simply be that one doesn't like the fact that they don't have or can't have what another person has. Status is something that all people want, and sometimes a person wants it so bad that it hurts.

It could mean one has low self-esteem. I have had past experiences where the person who was jealous was cheating all the time, so he was always accusing me of doing what he was doing - not so much jealous, but guilty. Maybe the person has been hurt before and is still gun-shy . . .

it mostly is, but then again some people are less fortunate than others, and it makes them sorta dislike those who have more because of their attitudes. It depends. Jealousy usually occurs when you have what some one else wants but can't get like your best friend wanting your boyfriend or girl friend, so they mess it up for you so that if they can't have them, neither can you...stuff like that.

yes it means the person being jealous feels insecure and inadequate.
if u are jealous of someone you are telling yourself and others that the person you are jealous of possesses things/abilities that you yourself cannot attain.
