Far too often, someone wil ltake me seriously either on here or in an e-mail. And just typing "I'm being sarcastic." seems to defeat teh purpose.

Usually it's signified through italics, but because Yahoo doesn't allow that, you should just be sarcastic and mock the idiot who takes you seriously.

Sarcasm, as well as humor usually doesn't come across very well in the written word. Since none of us really knows each other, we can only assume everyone is serious and respond accordingly. I am sure you have been here long enough to know how many really foolish questions - and answers - there are here. People who really know a subject want to help and then they come across a poorly worded question and they don't get that you were trying to be sacrastic.

I have found that if you put a word or phrase in parenthesis (inside joke) following the sarcasm, it could work to your better advantage (NOT!), See what I mean?

I just can't believe how many numpties don't get sarcasm at all!
You're right, if you have to tell them, what's the point? That said though, sarcasm, on the whole, works best when you are face to face with someone as your facial expressions and body language add to the sentiment. You'd be surprised just how much these two physical things contribute to the spoken word (it's something we learnt about in the psychology module on my degree course!).

You could maybe put "wink, wink, nudge, nudge" at the end of what you've typed? A bit lame though, I know!

it would be revived... it extremely is quite perplexing to place across sarcasm on line in specific situations. @ Norma and 317: Yea it may desire to be the "lowest sort of wit" yet all people seems to forget that it continues to be the utmost sort of intelligence. So what's incorrect with sarcasm?

I don't know, but I wish I did. I asked a question the other day that I thought reeked of sarcasm, but out of the ten answers I got none of them caught the sarcasm and I got slammed for "believing something so stupid." It seems like on here cleverness just goes over some folks heads........

I agree with Rusty.

And, in general, I think perhaps you should avoid sarcasm in e-mails, because of that problem.
