Below is a link to the breed standard for German Shepherds. My friend has a female out of a famous European stud that is on the small size of the standard. Now she is an amazing dog, works great in protection and tracking. Just because a dog is on the small side of the standard doesn't mean there is anything wrong with it. If the dog isn't papered, though, you have no proof of his lineage.

They are highly intelligent and highly trainable it doesn't matter the size! If you ever noticed cops use them as their dug dogs arson dogs crime dogs! I also have a German Shepard they are also highly protective! They will most often go after a stranger which is not always a bad thing in case you ever had an intruder! But if they are trained and have lots of attention walks and chew toys you can expect it to become your best friend in no time! Make sure they have LOTS of chew toys! Because if not they will chew everything in site! I recommend the large beef bones which can be bought at any pet store! They are working dogs and constantly need something to do! So if you leave him alone give him a job or a toy! So if you have lots of time for them and lots of love you will have the best dog you have ever had!

As long as the Dog NOT have papers like AKC etc. then it a high quality dog. The AKC papers prove it is inbred and susceptible to all sorts of problems. That why people pay for these papers, so, they can know all the Hereditary problems of inbreeds. Hopefully you have a good purebred dog that looks German, if there no papers on him to prove different.

not all German shepherds are big. just look at him as he is and he will become what ever you want. he is a companion, friend and beautiful to anyone who loves him just look at him as his head is shaped his feet and his hind quarters are beautifully shaped. does it really matter what the neighbors dog looks like its personality that matters.

Go to dog shows and look at the GS dogs there. Take your dog and ask them their opinion of its quality.
