Why do revelations from divine messengers only come to prophets in secret and out of sight of witnesses instead of God using skywriting?

I'd probably ask what the religion was fully about. You see, I an a Christian and am curious about other religions as I grow more in my faith. I think it would be interesting to understand what Islam is all about, then maybe I can help defend it from some of the people who feel the need to insult whatever religion they can.

If islam is the religion of peace, where is the peace? How do you get it? Where is it? What is it?
