I think this would've been a great fight at 147. Both are fast, have decent power and have a lot of ring intelligence. who wins this fight?

Leonard relatively easily. Although De La Hoya's demonstrated speed, some power and intelligence, I'd give Leonard the edge in each of those areas. After beating De La Hoya to the punch round after round, Leonard by 9th round TKO.

I'm a big De La Hoya fan, but Sugar Ray is high on my list of the "pound for pound" best ever. Fought (and beat) a freaky level of competition. Both guys tough as nails, with decent power but Leonard was the "slicker" fighter and had better handspeed. He was probably also a better tactical fighter--Oscar has shown some questionable ring generalship at times (particularly against Trinidad, where he thought he had won enough of the early rounds and essentially took the last few rounds off). Leonard by unanimous decision...

De La Hoya was moving up to Welter and Leonard was a natural Welter (a classic case of a good big man against a good little man). Leonard can match Oscar speed for speed. In the later rds, Leonard's power turns the bout in his favor. Leonard in a 11 rd TKO.

Leonard. Faster than De La Hoya with both hand and foot. Although De La Hoya is an intelligent fighter, Leonard was smarter. Both fighters have great chins so I don't see a TKO or KO result. Leonard by unanimous decision. Leonard had what it took to win fights the way he needed to win them. Whether he needed a KO when behind (Hearns), or whether he needed to demean and embarrass his opponent (2nd Duran fight), or get on the bicycle and flurry his way to a win (Hagler). Playing the part of the tactical counter puncher (Benitez). He always seemed to be able to come thru. De La Hoya on the other hand has made costly mistakes in the ring. Against Trinidad, Mosley he made mistakes tactically which cost him fights (he thought he had them in the bag). That's what would cost De La Hoya In this fantasy matchup. Leonard had more ring savvy. (Could you imagine all the backroom negotiating going on before this fight? Both guys liked to have it their way. Going in to a fight with the "deck stacked" in their favor so to say).

caldenjon... Right on I've watched that fight and I thought Whitaker won that one!

Leonard wins. "Brent F" has it right. Although both are intelligent fighters, De La Hoya gets frustrated when fighting elusive fighters. While in his prime, he fought a 'past-prime' Pernell Whitaker who easily beat De La Hoya simply because of his quick style but The Golden Boy got the decision most likely because of recognition. That wouldn't happen with a Sugar Ray Leonard in his prime.

This fight would be a draw. The judges wouldn't know which one to cheat for, because they are both so well-loved.

Thomas Hearns found this out the hard way when the announcers on TV had him winning every round but one in the second fight with Leonard, but gave Leonard the decision. That was sickening, and turned me off on boxing for a long time.

I believe this could be a very thrilling fight with both men having excellent ring skills and good power. I believe for 10 rounds it would be about even with Leonard landing some hard shots near the end to capture a close decision.

Great fight. I wonder that myself. I usually pick the older guys. But I'd hate to pick against Oscar. Still, Leonard might win on a narrow "steal."
