im not trying to be a racist or mean or anything but im wondering what african-american/black/colored (whicheveryou choose) are called.
brown skin so why black?
many of you were born here in america making you an american not african-american. the people that moved from africa to america and are still alive are african americans. hear me out. i was born in america and i consider myself an american. my ancestors are german, irsh, and italian so could i say i want you to call me an italian-german-irish-american because thats what my heritage and ancestory is? well im jsut wondering... PLEASE dont take offense but i was wondering if anybody else thought the same way i did.

I agree! and i am black. When i was a kid I used to say 'I am brown, not black!" but white ppl are peach, not white. If you drew a white person, wouldn't u color their face peach and not leave it the way it was?? wikipedia has a TON of stuff on african american. U don't have to read all of it, i didn't. If it's all about heritage, the only real Americans are Native Americans. Everyone else is (name your country or continent here)-American.

I was born here also, as were my parents. My Dad's parents are from Germany. Mom's parents from England. Does that make me a German-English American?

What you say is right. If you were born here and have lived here all your life - no matter your heritage - you are an AMERICAN.

African Americans are truly displaced persons. Not "wanted" by Africans or Americans. The term is used loosely to announce persons of African heritage somehow having American ties; otherwise known as slavery. The ramifications thereof continue to haunt descendants even today.

It is a last ditch effort to have an identity. When your very existence is questioned; history is rewritten to protect those who attempted to rob you of rights assumed proper for dogs, and you are furthermore blamed by and alienated from society for crimes committed by the perpetrators.

Sorry for the killjoy. Though it may sound weird to you, the need for validation prompts a different response for those who have never been recognized.

I PREFER to be called an African American BECAUSE I AM a descendant of Africans who were kidnapped by Europeans and White Americans from the west coast of Africa and FORCED into physical slavery!!!!!!

If this wouldnt have ever happened i would still be an AFRICAN!!! but since this tragic event happened we are to be called AFRICAN-AMERICANS. Everyone that is born in America arent AMERICANS. because Mexicans that were born in America Are called LATINAS OR LATINOS so we are called AFRICAN-AMERICANS and whites are orginally called EUROPEAN-AMERICANS....(ETC)
